Which Awning Fits Your Roof Tent?

Want more sheltered space next to your roof tent? There are several solutions – annexes, tarps, the Universal Connector, pop-up tents and cassette awnings. Here we explain the differences, show exactly which accessories fit each Wild Land model, and tell you what we recommend.

Key Takeaways

  • Annexes give the most weather protection but are model-specific – always check which variant fits your tent
  • The Universal Tarp and Universal Connector are flexible shade roofs that fit most models
  • Pop-up tents (Hub 400/400XL) are our most convenient option – up in under 2 minutes, freestanding, and fit every roof tent
  • The Universal Connector can link your roof tent to a Hub tent
  • Cassette awnings stay mounted but don't fit every roof rack – contact us if unsure

The different types of accessories

Before you choose, it helps to understand the difference between the solutions. Here's a quick overview.

Annex

An annex like the Nomad or Annex XL attaches directly under the roof tent and creates a closed, weatherproof room for changing, storage or extra sleeping space. Most protection, but model-specific.

Tarp & shade roof

The Universal Tarp is a flexible shade roof that protects over a table and chairs. Lighter and more versatile than an annex, and fits almost all of our roof tents.

Universal Connector

A larger solution (up to 16 m²) with three modes. It can be used freestanding, against the car – or to link your roof tent to a Hub tent.

Pop-up tent (Hub)

The Hub 400 and Hub 400XL pop up in under 2 minutes, are freestanding and can stand in the garden. The most convenient option – but it doesn't sit as close to the tent's entrance.

Cassette awning

Oasis and Rollout stay mounted on the roof rack and roll out in under a minute. Trickier to mount and not compatible with every roof rack.

Our first choice: pop-up tents

Before you settle on an annex or a tarp – in most cases we actually recommend our pop-up tents, the Hub 400 and Hub 400XL. They go up in under 2 minutes, are freestanding, and work just as well in the garden at home as next to the car.

Advantages

  • Pops up and packs down in under 2 minutes
  • Freestanding – use it by the car or at home in the garden
  • Spacious and airy with mosquito netting, can be fitted with walls
  • Works with every roof tent model

Worth noting

Doesn't sit as close to the tent's entrance as an annex or tarp. For some models you can solve this with the Universal Connector, which links the roof tent to the Hub tent.

Hub tent accessories

You can make the Hub tent cosier and more weatherproof with a few smart accessories:

Side wallProtects against wind, sun and prying eyes – creates a more private space inside the tent.

Cloud WallA clear plastic window that protects against the weather while keeping light and the view.

Rain CoverMounts on top of the tent for extra rain protection. Fits Hub models with LED lighting.

Tent floorCreates a sheltered, comfortable surface and keeps gear off the ground.

Recommendations per roof tent model

Find your model below to see which accessories fit – and which one we recommend.

Voyager Pro 230

The Voyager Pro 230 is our largest hardshell tent with room for up to 5 people. Three accessories fit: the Nomad – an annex purpose-built for the Voyager Pro series that creates a fully enclosed room under the tent – plus the Universal Tarp and Universal Connector shade roofs.

Our recommendation

If you want an enclosed annex for changing, storage or extra sleeping space – choose the Nomad, built specifically for the Voyager Pro. If you'd rather have a shade roof, we recommend the Universal Connector over the Universal Tarp: it covers up to 16 m², has three modes, and can also link the tent to a Hub tent.

Voyager Pro 160

The Voyager Pro 160 is one of our best-sellers – a hardshell tent for 3 people. Just like on the 230, the Nomad annex creates an enclosed extra room, and both the Universal Tarp and Universal Connector work as shade roofs.

Our recommendation

Same advice as for the 230: choose the Nomad if you want an enclosed annex. For a shade roof we recommend the Universal Connector over the Universal Tarp – more area, three modes, and the option to link the tent to a Hub tent.

Voyager Pro 130

The Voyager Pro 130 is the compact two-person model in the Voyager Pro series. It works with the Nomad annex, which creates a sheltered room under the tent, and the Universal Tarp as a shade roof over a table and chairs by the entrance.

Our recommendation

Choose the Nomad if you want an enclosed annex with all-round protection – and the Universal Tarp if you mainly want shade and rain cover over the seating area outside the tent.

Lite Cruiser 120 XL

The Lite Cruiser 120 XL is a light, compact softshell tent at just 36 kg. It works with the Universal Connector – a large, flexible shade roof that adds plenty of weather-protected space next to this nimble tent.

Our recommendation

The Universal Connector is the accessory that fits the Lite Cruiser 120 XL. If you'd rather have a freestanding option, the Hub 400 or Hub 400XL works great – and can even be linked to the tent using the Universal Connector.

Wild Cruiser 160

The Wild Cruiser 160 is a spacious, lightweight softshell tent. It works with the Annex XL in Model A, which creates an enclosed 305 × 365 cm camping room for changing, storage or extra sleeping space. Note that the Universal Tarp does not fit the Wild Cruiser 160.

Our recommendation

The Annex XL (Model A) is our pick for the Wild Cruiser 160 – the only annex that fits this model. If you just want shade, a freestanding Hub tent is the most convenient option, since the Universal Tarp isn't compatible.

Wild Cruiser 250

The Wild Cruiser 250 is a large family tent for up to 5 people. It pairs with the Annex XL in Model B for an enclosed extra room, and the Universal Tarp as a shade roof over the social area outside the tent.

Our recommendation

For family camping we recommend the Annex XL (Model B) – the extra room makes a big difference with a full crew. The Universal Tarp is a good, simpler alternative if you mainly want shade over the table and chairs.

Desert Cruiser 140

The Desert Cruiser 140 is a low, aerodynamic hardshell tent for 2–3 people. It works with the Annex XL in Model A for a fully enclosed room under the tent, and the Universal Tarp as a flexible shade roof by the entrance.

Our recommendation

Choose the Annex XL (Model A) if you want an enclosed room for changing and storage – and the Universal Tarp if you mainly want a light shade roof that's quick to set up.

Desert Cruiser 120

The Desert Cruiser 120 is the slim 1–2 person version of our popular low-profile hardshell tent. Just like the 140, it works with the Annex XL (Model A) for an extra camping room and the Universal Tarp as a shade roof.

Our recommendation

Choose the Annex XL (Model A) for an enclosed extra room – and the Universal Tarp if you travel light and just want shade and rain cover by the entrance.

Rock Cruiser Pro

The Rock Cruiser Pro is a fast hardshell tent with generous interior height and a roughly 30-second setup. It works with the Annex XL in Model B for an enclosed room, and the Universal Tarp as a shade roof by the entrance.

Our recommendation

Choose the Annex XL (Model B) if you want an enclosed camping room by the tent – and the Universal Tarp if you want to keep things fast with just a simple shade roof.

SE-180

The SE-180 is our hardshell tent for 3–4 people with a diesel heater opening. It has its own annex solution – the Annex for the SE-180 – which creates a spacious 300 × 300 cm camping room connected directly to the tent.

Our recommendation

The Annex for the SE-180 is the annex made for this model – choose the Summit Explorer 180 variant when ordering. Other annexes and tarps do not fit the SE-180.

Bush Cruiser V2 140

The Bush Cruiser V2 140 is a low hardshell tent with a rear entrance – perfect if you use the tailgate as part of your camp. It works with the Universal Tarp, which creates sheltered space behind the car where the entrance is.

Our recommendation

The Universal Tarp is the accessory that fits the Bush Cruiser V2 140. If you want a larger, enclosed room, a freestanding Hub tent is the best complement.

Bush Cruiser V2 120

The Bush Cruiser V2 120 is the slimmer rear-entry model for 1–2 people. Both the Universal Tarp and the larger Universal Connector fit as shade roofs behind the car.

Our recommendation

We recommend the Universal Connector if you want maximum area and flexibility – up to 16 m² and three modes. The Universal Tarp is a simpler, cheaper option if you just want shade over the seating area.

Normandy Auto 120

The Normandy Auto 120 is a light softshell tent at around 36 kg that sits directly on top of the car. It works with the Universal Tarp as a convenient shade roof, and the Annex XL in Model B if you want a fully enclosed extra room by the tent.

Our recommendation

Choose the Universal Tarp to match the tent's light, simple character – and the Annex XL (Model B) if you camp longer in one spot and want an enclosed room.

Cassette awnings

Cassette awnings are a really convenient solution that stays mounted on the roof rack and rolls out in under a minute. They work regardless of which roof tent you have.

Oasis 180A 180° cassette awning that rolls out in one motion and can be used without support legs.

Oasis 270A 270° awning that creates a large sheltered area around the side and rear of the car.

Rollout ProA compact side awning that stays mounted and rolls out in under a minute. Can be extended with side walls.

Cassette awnings are trickier to mount and don't fit every roof rack. Contact us before ordering and we'll help you check that it fits your car.
