SE-180 vs Voyager Pro 230
Both are spacious hardshell tents, but they're built with different priorities. The Voyager Pro 230 is our more practical family choice, while the SE-180 is a well-equipped tent with several smart details.
In most cases we steer towards the Voyager Pro 230. The SE-180 is a nice tent, but it weighs more and doesn't give the same overall balance relative to weight and sleeping area. The SE-180 becomes most relevant if you specifically want its equipment.
Quick summary
The Voyager Pro 230 gives a better balance of weight, sleeping area, condensation handling, insulation and practical use. It's our first choice for most families.
The SE-180 is a nice tent with smart details, but it weighs more and gives less sleeping area than the Voyager Pro 230. We don't normally steer towards the SE-180 if you just want the best family tent – it becomes relevant once you specifically ask for the SE model's features and the car can handle the weight.
Weight and roof load
Weight is one of the most important differences. The SE-180 weighs more than the Voyager Pro 230. That matters especially because many cars have a relatively limited maximum roof load – which leaves very little margin for roof bars and any extra load.
The Voyager Pro 230 is lighter and therefore considerably easier to fit on more cars, with better margin against the roof load.
Sleeping area
The Voyager Pro 230 has the largest sleeping area and clearly gives the most family room, especially for 2 adults and up to 3 children. The SE-180 has good width, but is shorter and gives less total sleeping area.
If you want maximum family room, the Voyager Pro 230 is the stronger choice.
Condensation and insulation
This is one of the Voyager Pro 230's biggest advantages. The Voyager Pro has two integrated tent canopies, which give better insulation and better condensation handling – moisture ends up between the layers to a greater extent rather than inside the sleeping space.
The SE-180 has good materials and comes with a condensation mattress, but shouldn't normally be positioned as better than the Voyager Pro 230 for condensation and insulation. The difference is especially noticeable on colder or damper nights.
The SE-180's details
The SE-180 has several thoughtful details that can make it relevant for the right customer. It can be a good choice if you specifically want:
- A narrower format when folded.
- A condensation mattress included.
- A dimmable LED strip.
- Roof storage, a ladder bag and shoe bags.
- Two diesel heater openings.
The prerequisite is that the car and roof bars can handle the weight, and that you accept that the SE-180 weighs more and gives less sleeping area than the Voyager Pro 230.
Loading on top of the tent
The Voyager Pro 230 can be fitted with Wild Land Crossbars V3, so you can load gear on top of the tent. That gives a good balance between the tent's weight and the ability to expand your setup later.
The SE-180 can use Wild Land Crossbars V2, but since the tent weighs more, the margin for extra load is often worse. Many people don't think about load bars at first, but after a few trips they often want to bring more gear – and then the Voyager Pro 230 is usually more practical.
Our advice
If you ask which tent is best, we'd first choose the Voyager Pro 230. You get a better balance of weight, sleeping area, insulation and condensation handling, and the double canopies make a big difference in a Nordic climate.
We'd choose the SE-180 if you specifically want the SE model's details and the car can handle the weight. Always check the car model, roof load and roof bars before deciding – if you're unsure, we're happy to help.
